Healthy Eyes

To keep your eyes seeing well and feeling comfortable, it is essential that you keep your entire body as healthy as you can. This is because the eyes are entirely dependant on the general physiology and biochemistry of the body. The following 5 principles are especially important if you have macular degeneration or cataracts or if you have had surgery for cataracts.

Supplement

A suggested daily supplement regimen for healthy eyes:
Eyes Rx Plus (2 capsules) (by FitHealth)
Vitamin D3 1500IU (eg 3 tablets of Solal Vit D3 500IU)
Vitamin C 500mg (making a total of 625mg as Eyes Rx Plus has 125mg)
Zinc 15mg (making a total of 30mg per day as Eyes Rx Plus contains 15mg)

Detox

This means giving up all things toxic to the body. Chief culprit is smoking. Smoking can lead to severe eye problems and even blindness and should therefore be completely avoided. Other things to avoid in excess are passive smoking (“second-hand smoke” from other people’s cigarettes), alcohol, pain-killers, addictive prescription drugs, excessive sunlight (wear a hat and sunglasses), excessive salt, sugar, high GI foods (eg white bread, biscuits, cake, sweets, chocolates, and most other refined foods), fizzy drinks (even diet sodas are not good in excess).

Eat Well

A healthy balanced diet is essential. Make sure you eat fruits (all colours), vegetables (especially tomatoes, carrots, avocados, onions, spinach, broccoli, pumpkin), nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashews, pecans, macadamians), seeds (pumpkin and sunflower seeds), eggs (poached or boiled about 5 per week), fish (salmon, sardines, pilchards), meat, and poultry. For salad dressing use extra-virgin olive oil and flax seed oil.

Exercise

Moderate exercise is good for the eyes. Make sure you do aerobic exercise (getting the heart and respiration rate up) and strength training. Walking is excellent.

Medical help

Make sure your blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, etc are all well controlled. See your GP or physician regularly. Annual medical check-ups are important for everyone over age 50 even if you are feeling fine.
